Dubbing DVDs all the live-long day! [Mar. 26th, 2008|09:04 pm]

I made my way through the last few videotapes and then got the idea of converting cassette tapes to DVDs without downloading them to a hard drive. It worked, after several experiments.

The unit is a Sony Multi-Function DVD Recorder, and the salesman at Best Buy tells me it's fairly new. Highly recommended (and for the pirates among you, it just flat refuses to copy over a commercial DVD with copy protection).

I did copy some of my own DVDs for some friends, including a videotape of a court in Indy during the reign of Talymar and Eislinn. George told me tonight that he actually didn't have any video footage of their courts and such, so I was happy to have thought of him.

Among the videotapes I threw away were tapes with films that have become available on DVD. I found "The Return of Martin guerre" last night (unfortunately the English-dubbed version) and looked up to see if it was available on DVD yet. Turns out it was not, and Amazon is selling a DVD released in 98 (and now unavailable) for over $70. I think that qualifies as unavailable!

In related matters, Kino is releasing a 3-volume set of Houdini's movies. After a look at the trailer (http://www.kino.com/houdini/), I had to get it. Houdini was one of our if not the first superstar, and looking at those clips showed me why. I'm looking forward to receiving the full video (and love that robot!). Kino is Good Stuff Maynard, and their service & quality is impeccable.

Memories of Houdini

(Link)

My Grandpa Urbanowicz (Pop-Pop) was part of the generation that was wowed by Harry Houdini. When we were young, he used to point to things like the freezer, fridge, or even a cognac bottle and tell us with a twinkle in his eye that "Houdini was in there."
